Boat Name Decals: A Guide to Designing the Perfect Look

Measure the clear transom area and account for fittings before requesting a custom boat-name lettering proof.

Boat name decals are custom-cut marine vinyl letters and graphics that display your vessel's name on the hull, typically on the transom or sides. To design the perfect look, start with a concept that matches your boat's personality, choose a legible font, a contrasting color, a layout (name alone or with a hailing port and graphics), and size the lettering to fit the flat hull space. The best material is Oracal 651 marine vinyl, which lasts 5-7 years.

Draw the usable transom before choosing the name layout

Map ladders, lights, handles, outlets and changes of surface on the transom. Measure the clear area for the name and any separate port line. Show where a curved panel changes angle so the proof can be reviewed for the surface where it will actually sit.

The boat-name preview helps explore typography and color. It is separate from registration-number pricing. Submit the name for a reviewed quote and confirm any documented-vessel marking requirements independently.
