Choosing the Right Boat Registration Numbers: Size, Font & Placement

Ensure your vessel is legally compliant while looking great. Learn the rules for sizing, fonts, and placement of hull numbers.

Sizing Guidelines & Regulatory Requirements

The US Coast Guard and state boating authorities have strict regulations regarding hull identification numbers. The universal baseline requirement is that all characters must be at least 3 inches in height.

Font Selection and Compliance

While you want your boat to look unique, compliance is key. Regulations mandate the use of a "plain, block font." This means script, highly stylized, or heavily italicized fonts are generally prohibited. The color of the numbers must also contrast strongly with the hull color (e.g., black numbers on a white hull).

Placement Regulations

Your registration numbers must be placed on the forward half of the vessel on both the port and starboard sides. They must be permanently attached and read from left to right. Ensure there is a hyphen or an equivalent space between the state prefix, the numbers, and the suffix (e.g., FL 1234 AB).

Design Considerations

If your hull has a complex graphic wrap or a multi-color gelcoat, consider using numbers with a contrasting outline. An outline helps the 3-inch block letters stand out clearly against busy backgrounds, ensuring you remain compliant and visible to law enforcement on the water.
