Custom Boat Lettering: How to Choose Your Size, Font, and Color

Use clear panel height and width to compare registration-number layouts without shrinking required characters to fit.

Custom boat lettering is precision-cut marine vinyl text applied to a boat's hull to display a boat name, hailing port, registration numbers, or decorative graphics. To choose the right size, font, and color, pick a height that stays readable from 50-100 feet, a legible font (block for registration numbers), and a color that contrasts strongly with the hull. The most durable, compliant option is Oracal 651 marine vinyl, which lasts 5-7 years.

Separate character height from kit width

Measure the uninterrupted forward panel on both sides and note where the surface curves away. Character height and the full number’s width are separate constraints. A change of typeface can affect width, so compare the complete assigned sequence rather than a short sample word.

If the preferred design does not fit, ask for a layout review instead of reducing character height below the applicable rules. Include a drawing of the usable space when a photograph alone hides the curve.
