Coastal boats
San Diego, Monterey Bay and San Francisco Bay boats often have narrow or curved forward hull panels. Make a width mockup before cutting.
California • custom cut vinyl number kits
From Pacific harbors to inland lakes, build CF lettering that reads clearly on your actual hull.
California boating puts registration lettering through very different conditions: sun and salt spray around San Diego and San Francisco Bay, freshwater use in the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta, and seasonal trips to reservoirs or Lake Tahoe. Your decal layout should work for your hull rather than rely on a decorative font that looks good only on a screen.
We produce number lettering, not the state-issued registration or validation sticker.
On a low-profile runabout, first check the height and length of the usable bow panel. On a sailboat or fishing boat with fittings near the bow, test where the numbers remain unobstructed. Dark hulls usually need a light contrasting color; light gelcoat generally calls for dark characters. Take a photo from several feet away to judge readability.
A boat name for the transom and a registration number are separate design jobs. Script and ornamental lettering can work beautifully for a vessel name, but registration characters need a plain, clearly readable treatment. If you trailer between California waterways or visit another state, review the rules that apply to the assigned registration before applying anything permanent.
Measure and choose your number size →San Diego, Monterey Bay and San Francisco Bay boats often have narrow or curved forward hull panels. Make a width mockup before cutting.
The Delta and inland reservoirs bring a mix of aluminum fishing boats, pontoons and runabouts; color contrast can differ radically by hull material.
Keep required registration characters clear of rub rails, graphics, fenders and boat-name flourishes so the complete number reads as one sequence.
California's registration administration and official validation decals are handled by the DMV. We produce custom vinyl characters using the number you've been assigned; we cannot issue or renew a registration or supply a state-issued validation sticker.
Always check the latest vessel registration and number-display instructions from the California Department of Motor Vehicles. Display and validation requirements can vary by vessel and registration status; do not rely on a design mockup as legal approval.

Yes. If your assigned CF number remains valid and you simply need replacement vinyl lettering, enter exactly that number in the designer. Confirm the characters against your certificate.
Choose good contrast, inspect the hull finish, and clean and dry the application area. For frequent saltwater use, follow the vinyl care instructions and replace lifting or damaged decals.
Keep registration lettering plain, legible, and consistent with the official number-display instructions. Save decorative fonts for the boat name or non-regulatory graphics.
